Fo r most of my life, I have been involved in both the visual and performing arts both separately and simultaneously. As a young girl about the age of 6 and 7, I was singing, painting & drawing, telling stories and performing in the school plays. By the time I was 8 years old, I was producing and directing haunted houses, original puppet shows & plays, one woman self-indulgent 8 year old shows most of which took place in my basement in Philadelphia. By 9 years old I was planning festivals and fairs with my best-friend andpartner. We utilized a big field/park across our Philadelphia urban street involving all "walks" of neighborhood street kids. Our most successful fair ride was made out of a big wheel with 3 red wagons attached that sped dangerously fast down a huge hill. There was lots of face painting, brownies and lemonade, and puppet shows as enjoyment which would run a kid between the range of 3 to 10 cents per item. Our largest profit was $18. The reason I bring up this early time in my youth is because I still do or try to do all of those things that I did at 8 and 9 years old, today. I still paint, tell stories, write plays, direct, produce, act & sing (now only if someone gives me the part). It’s what I am meant to be doing and if you simply it down it's about telling the story. The most recent addition to my story was graduating with an MFA in directing in June from Brooklyn College (2008). I first came to NYC to pursue acting gaining most of my work in musical theater for a good solid 10 years. Always a comedic actress, I entered the world of improvisational and sketch comedy in which I performed and studied for a solid five years. I came into directing about 6 years ago after I started directing sketch comedies and shows that I had written. Some of these shows in addition to numerous sketch shows were: Scramble (a variety show), Law and Odor (a spoof), Almost Housebroken (a sketch show with a puppy). Quickly, I expanded to directing one acts and then full-length plays and musicals. As a director, I have worked in summer stock, directed in and around NYC and have produced my own plays and musicals. Additionally, I pursue playwriting and have recently penned a full-length entitled Echar Agua de Milagro del East River. My career goal is quite simply to direct and be working as a director on projects that I am "passionate" about. (see artistic statement)Eventually I see myself running a summer stock or regional theater in a beautiful place that has a need for theater in its community. I’m not sure yet if this “theater” is one that I start-up myself or after gaining experience is something I come into. I actively pursue work I love. I often have had playwrights send me their work and then I meet them for coffee to discuss. Sometimes collaborations will start. My undergraduate degree( a BFA in painting with a theater minor from the University of Hartford) helped support my pursuit as a scenic painter- painting backdrops and sets for the stage. I have been painting as long as I’ve been acting. I also have designed some. I love animals and I also paint pet portraits (paintings of peoples dogs and cats). www.petandhouseportait.com Although I have many different skills in the arts, I use them all to focus on theater. |
